Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, broader discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
