EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
